입영 전야
"Soldier"
그동안 군인-한국남자들의 젊음에 대한 이야기(2002-이등병, 2004예비역,2009-사병증명, 2011- 12mm)를 사진으로 작업해 왔다. 이번에 발표하는 새로운 다섯 번째 연작은 입영을 앞두고 머리를 삭발한 청년들의 누드(nude)이다.
입영 전날, 긴 머리를 12mm로 깎고 스튜디오에서 조명을 받으며 나체로 렌즈를 마주하는 청년의 모습에는, 그가 지나왔던 시간과, 그가 속해있던 환경, 앞으로 다가올 미래에 대한 불안함이 한순간에 우러나와 사진을 통해 표면으로 드러난다. 그렇게 완성된 사진을 통해 재발견된 그들의 모습에서, 나는 군인으로서의 강인함이 아닌 아직은 여리고 앳된 소년을 발견한다.
그들은 20여 년간의 개인사를 가진 사람이며 동시에 존중 받아야 마땅한 인격체이다. 때문에 그들을 군복을 입은 군인이라는 프레임 속에 가두고 바라보지 말아야 한다. 겉으로 보이는 모습과 상관없이 그들을 인간으로서 인지하고 대우해야 한다. 그들은 군인인 동시에 국가로부터 동등하게 보호받아야 할 시민이기도 하기 때문이다.
나는 이 청년들을 표현함으로써 군복을 입고 모자를 쓴 획일화된 스테레오타입의 군인이 아닌, 있는 그대로의 한국 청년 상으로 그들을 바라보고자 했다.

#5, 2017 Over the years, I have been working on photographs of soldiers - stories about young Korean men (2002-A Private, 2004 Reserve, 2009 - Soldier ID Photo, 2011-12mm). The fifth new series to be released this year consists of nude shots of young people who have shaved their heads ahead of their enlistment day.
On the night before his enlistment day, the young man who has cut his long hair to only 12mm long faces the lens while naked in the studio. This unfiltered image reveals a complexity of emotions derived from his personal life, his background, and his anxiety that he feels about the future. When the image finally came out, I discovered a reflection of a young boy, not a strong soldier. In the army, soldiers are supplies without personalities.
However, they are individuals who have twenty years of personal history and are worthy of respect. We should no longer lock them inside the frame of a soldier in a military uniform.
Should we recognize and treat them as human beings regardless of how they look on the outside? They are soldiers fulfilling their military duty. But they are also citizens who must be equally protected by the country. By expressing these young people`s nudity in my photos,
I wanted to look at them as who they were, ordinary young Korean men, and not just as stereotypical soldiers wearing military uniforms and hats.
