12mm
이등병은 입대 전 머리카락 길이를 12mm로 잘라야만 한다. 삭발은 20대 청년들이 획일적이고 집단적인 군대문화로 편입되는 시작점이다. <12mm> 작업은 입대를 전후한 동일 인물을 릴레이로 촬영함으로써 <이등병>, <예비역>, <사병증명> 등 지금까지의 군인 시리즈 전체를 관통하는 상징적 코드를 보여주고자 하였다.
입대를 앞두었던 내 기억은 아직도 생생하다. 입대 전 삭발을 하는 동안 촉촉해져 있던 어머니의 얼굴과 흘리는 눈물을 애써 감추며 잘 다녀오라는 한마디만 남기셨던 무뚝뚝한 아버지의 뒷모습. 입대하는 아침, 눈물의 밥상을 받아야 했던 낯선 느낌.
입영시리즈는 군대 입소를 바로 앞둔 이십 대 청년들의 초상작업이다. 입대 전 삭발을 한 채 가족, 연인, 친구들과 이별의 시간을 갖는 청년들의 눈빛에는 피할 수 없는 현실에 대한 체념과 애틋함, 동시에 군대 생활에 대한 불안과 갈등이 뒤섞여 있다. <이등병>, <예비역>, <사병증명> 시리즈에 이어 군대 생활의 시작점으로 다시 돌아가 곧 군인의 신분으로 변화될 이십 대 청년들의 다층적 모습을 추적하고, 그와 함께 포즈를 취한 동년배들 모습을 통해 현대인의 정체성의 한 단면을 바라보고자 한다.

Before entering the boot camp, a private must cut his hair to 12mm. Hair cutting is the starting point for young men in their 20s to become incorporated into a uniformed and collective military culture. Project <12mm> documents the same person in series before and after the enlistment. Thus it intends to establish a symbolic code penetrating through all previous soldier series including , and .
I still remember vividly how it was just before I entered the military. My mother’s face with teary eyes watching my head being shaved, back of my father who tried to hide his tears by simply telling me to be safe. That strange feeling of depressing breakfast on the morning I left for the camp.
The enlistment series is a portrait work of young men in their 20s about to enter the boot camp. Their heads already shaven before entering the gate, the eyes of these young men saying goodbyes to their family, lovers and friends are filled with emotion and resignation to their unavoidable fate simultaneously mixed together with anxiety and conflict about upcoming days at the military. Continuing from the private, reserve force, and portrait shot series, the project returns to the starting point of military service to follow through multi-sided features of the young men about to become soldiers and at the same time dissect through a contemporary section of modern day identity through faces of their friends captured together with them.
